Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed has urged the Victorian Government to stop playing politics with people’s household budgets and sign up to the Federal Government’s National Energy Guarantee.
Ms Sheed said it was time for all parties to work together to relieve the harsh financial pressures facing the Victorian community.
“For some time now electricity prices have been steadily growing and causing significant distress at many levels,” Ms Sheed said.
“I regularly have people knocking on my office door seeking assistance, either not knowing how they will pay their next power bill or facing the indignity of having their electricity cut off.
“It is unacceptable that people in our community are suffering like this as a result of Government inaction and we must do all that we can to alleviate their hardship.”
Ms Sheed said while the National Energy Guarantee may not fulfil everyone’s ideal of a perfect system, it would at least provide a long term framework and direction for industry and flow on benefits for consumers.
“Years of political infighting and public posturing has left us with a policy vacuum that has created huge energy bills for businesses and discouraged them from investing in renewable energies,” Ms Sheed said.
“Business needs this framework for industry security and sustainable development and communities need the financial relief it says it will deliver.
“Finally we have a way forward with a new framework on the table and feedback from my community suggests there is a keen desire to see us just get on with it.”
